Burberry Cosmetics: Sheer Luminous Fluid Foundation Swatches and Review

Sunday, October 3, 2010

The last visit I made to Nordstrom San Francisco, I unfortunately ran out of time to do full swatches of the Sheer Luminous Fluid Foundation.  Susie was kind enough to send me samples of each color so I can share them with you.  If you are interested in the Burberry Beauty line, please give her a call at Nordstrom San Francisco. She will help answer any product questions you may have and is great with color match for foundations/bronzer/blush.

I currently have the Sheer Luminous Fluid Foundation and the Sheer Luminous Compact Foundation.  If you follow me on twitter, you probably have seen me list them in several FOTD tweets.  The Luminous Fluid Foundation retails for $52USD for 1oz and the Sheer Luminous Compact Foundation is $55USD.  They can be purchased exclusively on the Nordstrom website or at some local counters.

Below are the ingredients for the liquid foundation, which is conveniently printed on the Burberry packaging.  The picture might be a bit small so if you're looking for a specific ingredient, please let me know.  There is definitely alcohol and silicon in the product, albeit not the first listed, but be aware of this before purchasing if you are allergic to them.

As previously reviewed, each of these come in a slightly heavy but very sturdy packaging with the classic Burberry check print. The Burberry check print top cap is heavier compared to the actual clear plastic package that holds the foundation.

To dispense the product, simply twist the cap to the right to unlock, and press down on the pump.  The locking mechanism is a great feature for traveling.  Since the cap is a bit heavy, you can bring the foundation without it on trips and not worry about accidental spills.

Each foundation has the number/color printed at the bottom of the package so it's very easy to identify.

I currently have the foundation in #6 called Trench.  This is a neutral color that's an equivalent but slightly more opaque version of Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Nude. The foundation doesn't really have a heavy fragrance or chemical smell like MAC or L'oreal foundations.

Although it is called "sheer", I would say this provides light to medium coverage, much more coverage compared to Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer.  I would use 1 pump for all over the face or spot coverage.  2 pumps will give medium coverage if you don't have a lot of pigmentation.  For those with lots of pigmentation, acne scars, etc, this foundation will not give full coverage.  These come in 9 different shades, ranging from #1 as the lighest to #9 as the darkest.

In the container,

#1 is a light beige that's best for pale skin tones.
#2 has the most obvious pink undertone out of all the shades.
#3 is a beige with peach undertone
#4 is a neutral color that is lighter than #6 but with more yellow tone
#5 is suitable for those with yellow undertone

#6 is a neutral color with no pink or yellow undertone.
#7 is darker than #5 with yellow undertone
#8 is a brown that's more suitable for darker skin tones, and is darker than #7
#9 is the darkest color in the collection and suitable for dark skin tone ladies.

As you know, foundation looks very different depending on the lighting condition.  I have included here several images in different lighting, from outdoor, indoor, and directly under the sun to give you an idea of how each will look on my NC30-NC35 skintone.  I used to be NC25-NC30 but I got an insane tan from my vacation 2 weeks ago.

Directly under the sun:

In terms of texture, the foundation is not exactly liquid or cream. It is a combination of both that is very light on the skin.  A lot of times I would find a foundation very heavy as though you feel like you're wearing a mask.  I don't have this issue with Burberry Sheer Luminous Fluid Foundation.  I usually apply it in the morning and come home 9 hours later without remembering or feeling like I have foundation on.  I have not had any breakout issues and the foundation does not separate in several hours like Chanel's foundations.

Do note that this foundation does oxidize several minutes after application.  It doesn't turn orange or pink but just a tad darker on the skin.  I wouldn't say there's an exact color that blends seamlessly into my skin but I would say #5 comes closest to my NC25-NC30 skintone.  I picked #6 because my skin is usually lighter in the winter time. For summer, #5 is definitely the correct color.

In terms of pricing, Burberry Sheer Luminous Fluid Foundation is right on par with high end foundations such as Chanel and Dior.  I wouldn't say this is a splurge because it does perform very well for a light/medium coverage foundation.  There are no annoying strong fragrances and it feels very comfortable and light on the skin, definitely not a "my pores are suffocating" type of feeling.  I like this much better compared to Chanel's foundations.  If you have dry patches on your face, be aware that this will emphasize them because it is not a creamy moisturizing formula.

Thank you for the very thorough review. The price is high, but it is a product of lux. And looks like the quality is not bad.

Great review. That's really cool that she sent you samples of every color. Most places don't like to give out samples. =\

this is such a high end product! My palms are itchy to get this brand LOL. I hope it doesnt have a strong fragrance smell like most high end product. I am allergic to those!

The packaging is cool...but the color has too much pink tones. I bet this wont work for me.

I have wanted to try this foundation for awhile. So far Burberry hasn't let me down with their products so I'm hoping I like it. I'm NC25 so you think #6 would be the best?

if i was a big foundation wearer i'd be ALL over this!!! so pretty! especially the packaging!

resham - Actually the only shade with pink undertones is #2. The rest are either beige or yellow undertone.

Diane - If you have yellow undertone, I'd say #5. But if you're looking for a color that's completely neutral, best bet would be #6 for winter time :)

Looks nice, but i really don't like foundations that feel very heavy.

Hi,

My skin matches Chanel #30 perfectly then which shade of Burberry foundation should I get?

Thanks

Kristie said...

Hi Anon - I think you will be between #4 and #5 but probably more so of #4. To be sure, I would suggest calling Susie at the Burberry counter from Nordstrom San Francisco to confirm. She's very friendly and helpful at finding shade matches. If you're international and cannot call, let me know and I can find out for you.

Great review! Very helpful! I am a true neutral. I wear 150 or 155 (when I spray tan) in Make Up For Ever HD Foundation. I just received the Burberry Sheer Luminous Foundation in no. 7 and a sample of the 6 in the mail. I love the formula, but the color is off. The No. 6 is too light, although the tone is correct and the No. 7 is too yellow & a little too light. Is the 8 or 9 neutral? Thank you.

Kristie said...

Hi Michelle, sorry to hear 6 and 7 didn't work for you. Have you tried mixing #6 and #7 to see if they would come out more neutral tone? #8 and 9 are both very dark compared to #7 but I think you'd be better of with #8. It has a slight yellow undertone but not as much as #7. Hope that helps.

This is such a helpful review! I really appreciated the analysis, as well as the swatch shots in different lights. Well done!

It kind of sucks that Burberry doesn't give samples of the foundation at their counters. How do they expect people to purchase the foundation if they aren't sure what shade they should get? This was really helpful and based on the swatches you made I think I must be #3 because it is the closest to my Revolon ColorStay Shade - which is 250 Fresh Beige. Actually it's a bit lighter which I was looking for since the Revlon is slightly too dark.

I have been trying to figure out what shade I am in this foundation since I do not have a counter near me :( I am exactly B20 in vitalumiere aqua and have narrowed it down to either #3 or #6

Hi there..I currently have a sample of trench 4 and I think I like the color, but I usually wear things that are a bit lighter. Based on the swatches you've tested and your previous knowledge of color matching, do you think trench 1 would be too light? I know 2 and 3 are not right, and anything darker than 4 would look silly. I usually wear #2 in every foundation (buff 2 in lancome teint miracle, sand in bobbi brown, creme ivory or warm ivory in laura mercier, NW 15-20 in mac I think). The ladies I've talked to keep matching me to 3 and it's darker than 4 so I don't know how that can be possible. I've got fair skin with neutral undertones leaning towards the warmer side. Please help if you can. Thanks!

Kristie said...

Hi Alexandra. It really depends how much lighter you'd like to go. If you like #4, I would say #1 is about 1.5-2 shades lighter. It might work for you. #3 leans more peach and is a tad darker compared to #4. The toughest thing about Burberry foundations is that there is no real exact dupe to other foundation lines. I'm borderline between #5 and #6 but neither matches exactly to my skin. I'd recommend trying out #1 and see if that works for you. Again it depends on how much lighter you want to go based on what you see from #4. HTH.

Thank you for responding Kristie . . . I would've thanked you sooner had it not been for finals week! Anyways, I'm going back to California tomorrow, so I'll test #1 and see how it works out. I was pale when I left LA, and I haven't seen the sun for about three months since I moved to Portland. At the moment, I'm unusually pale. Who knows--shade 1 could be perfect with my new found uber-paleness! Thanks again. If you have any other suggestions for great foundations, I'd be eager to know. I've tried pretty much everything out there, and I'm hoping there's some hidden gem of a foundation that I haven't discovered yet.

Best shades I've seen yet! I tried a sample of #05 and I love the feel and finish, but it is slightly too dark for me (still have my winter skin) should I try/mix it up with 4 or 6? I'm B30 for chanel vitalumiere aqua and have yellow undertones..

Saar said...

*Swatches I mean! Kept staring for a couple more hours at them and took the plunge, ordered # 4. Perfect match!

Kristie said...

Yay! I'm so glad 4 works for you. Enjoy!

Daindra said...

So which one do you think would suit best for NC 30-35? As the color turn out really different from directly under the sun and indoor :(

Kristie said...

Daindra, I would say the perfect match is a combo between 5 and 7. If you want a lighter shade, go with 5.

hi there,

I'm a 4.5 in Armani LSF, and a mix of N2 and C2 in mac face and body. Any idea what would work for me? I'm thinking either 4 or 6.

Carla said...

hi there! lovely review :) I was wondering what your thoughts were on using this with flash photography...thanks!

Kristie said...

Hi Carla, no issues with flash photography. There is SPF but it doesn't give a ghostly look unless the shade is really white on tanner skin.
