NARS Illuminator Swatches and Initial Review

Thursday, February 24, 2011

NARS recently came out with 3 new shades to expand the Illuminator line. These are priced at $29USD and are currently available at NARS boutiques and online.  I have been super excited about these since the initial press releases.  What are illuminators?  According to NARS, these are "a collection of light-reflecting liquids that glide on to refresh and enhance the complexion to create a shimmering incandescence". I think of these as liquid sheer blushes/bronzers/highlighters.

Since I couldn't contain my excitement, I visited Sephora to seek out these beauties.  I was really disappointed to see the "coming soon" sign when I got to the NARS section. Luckily, a super helpful SA gave me a sneak peek of the testers.  Boy was I happy!

The new Illuminators all come in a shorter and stubbier package.  It has exactly the same amt of product as the original Orgasm Illuminator.  I believe NARS changed the packaging due to numerous complaints.  The older package caused a lot of product to squirt out and there were some leakages.  I like these new ones because it's easy to control how much you want to dispense.

Taken with flash:

Laguna is a dark brown that's best used as a bronzer.  I thought this color was dark but can definitely be nice sheered out.  The swatch is about 1/2 of a pea size.
Copacabana reminded me right away of Benefit's High Beam.  It is a frosty white with pink undertone.  I tried this on my face and saw a slight silver sheen?

Super Orgasm is a pink with gold shimmer.  This is a lot more pink compared to Orgasm.  On my cheeks, it is a pink glossy sheen with TONS of shimmer.  I would be very careful about using this and double check the mirror before you walk out of the house.  It can be a potential glitter mess if not blended out correctly.

Orgasm is a sheer light bronze pink with shimmer. This looks similar to Orgasm powder blush in the package, but is not the same once applied.  I find this much more sheer and brown compared to the blush.

Here's another shot taken with outdoor lighting:

I think I'm still excited but am slightly unsure of how to get the desired effect when using them.  These are slightly sticky and on combination skin, the glossiness gives an almost oily/greasy effect.  I am NC25/30 and Super Orgasm was truly a hot glitter mess.  I applied these with my fingers so I suspect they might be better with a stippling brush.  I'm not ruling these out as of yet but they are sheer, except for Laguna.
Bottom line: Definitely check these out in person if you're unsure about the pigmentation or texture.  They will be glossy so oily skin ladies please try them out first.  If you're itching to buy Orgasm, I highly recommend waiting for the new packaging since it is much better in comparison.  If you don't care and will buy $125USD worth of NARS products, Nordstrom currently has a promotion where you can get a full size Orgasm Illuminator for FREE!

Are you looking forward to these? Which shade or shades?

I ordered Super Orgasm from the NARS website last week. I was a little worried it might be too shimmery, but plan on blending it out well! :) Thanks for the review!

I am in love with the look of super orgasm...soo pretty. I love my copacabana multiple but the illuminator looks kind of scary. I guess I will need to test it out in the store and see how it sheers out. These are the first swatches I have seen of these new products so thanks so much for sharing.
